sofis mode

I was in a Swedish magazine called Sofis mode !
Here is the translation of the interview. It's funny to look back and read my answers as I did this interview in December. I think I have changed somewhat even in that short time period.

Describe your style in your own words!
My style is definitely very girly. I love bows and frilly things, but I also love wearing all black. Some of my outfits have a vintage feel, particularly from the 1950's because of my full skirts, tights and cloches.

What's your philosophy when it comes to fashion?
Anyone can be fashionable; regardless of income, size, or any other factors that people claim hold them back from being fashion-forward. Some of the best clothing items are found at discount or used stores. All you need is creativity, inspiration, motivation and confidence to put together an outfit. Also, there is never a place you can't dress up. People often tell me I'm 'overdressed' but I don't care where I go; I like to dress up because I enjoy it.

How did you decide to start your blog? What impact would you say that it's had on your life?
I decided to start my blog after joining a fashion community called Chictopia. I already had some experience with HTML and graphic design, but I didn't think anyone would care to read my blog. Finally I decided to move past my worries and start a blog. At first I only had a few readers, but slowly that grew because of networking on other sites such as lookbook. The impact it has had is actually quite great. It became a new hobby of mine, and my mom is now an amazing photographer because of it, haha. I'm always thinking about what to write about next on my blog. Sponsorships from clothing companies were a huge shock for me, but a good shock.

If you could live anywhere in the world and work as anything you wanted to – where and what would it be?
That's a really hard question. If I could somehow bring all my family and friends with me, I would probably want to live somewhere like Portland, Boston or England. Living somewhere really warm like Australia is tempting, but Christmas wouldn't be the same if there wasn't snow. As for work, perhaps being a fashion teacher, freelance designer, business woman for a fashion company, or a fashion journalist.

How important is fashion and style to you? What is it about fashion that intrigues you?
It is fairly important to me; however I am not the most dedicated. For instance, I do not watch every runway show or follow designers. I'm more about everyday fashions. Everyday fashion is extremely important to me because I think that how you present yourself affects how you are perceived. Everything about fashion intrigues me. I love looking for new trends. I love how everyone can have their own unique style. I love the design aspects of fashion - fabrics, colour combinations, proportions, etc.

What's it like living in Winnipeg? How long have you lived there and what would you say is the best/worst part about living there?
I won't lie; Winnipeg isn't the best place to live. I've lived here my whole life. Sometimes it seems like there is no culture here. It is often crime-ridden and our downtown seems desolate because of it. Some downtowns in other cities are thriving and are the place to go - but everyone avoids it here. Shopping is decent here but we don't have stores like Zara, Forever 21, H&M or Urban Outfitters. Also, there are not many fashion job opportunities here.

The best and worst thing about Winnipeg is the weather. I love having snow for Christmas but the temperature can go as low as -40 degrees Celsius in January to March, or even April. Our summers are actually very warm and lovely - other than the mosquitos. Have I complained enough? Haha.

If you could change one thing about the fashion industry, what would it be?
Snooty attitudes. It scares me to enter the fashion industry because some of the people seem intimidating; but then again, that could just be a stereotype. Also sometimes I don't understand why prices are so high on certain items of clothing. Just because it has a brand name doesn't mean a plain tank top should be 100+ dollars.

What is your first/earliest fashion memory?
It seems like I've loved fashion my entire life. When I was young I had little notebooks full of my 'fashion designs.' I loved playing dress up/fashion show when I was little. My mom used to make me special dresses for Christmas concerts and such at school, and I always felt special wearing something completely unique.

Describe your wardrobe! (Not the place itself, but what’s in it!) :) Which one is your favourite piece?
Diverse with repeating themes. Themes such as bows, cardigans, blouses, and wide skirts. I have a collection of hats that consists of cloches, berets and straw hats for summer. My favourite piece is probably either a skirt from Forever 21 that has neutral-toned florals, or my wide bell skirt from Modcloth.

What did you look like, growing up? Did you try a lot of different styles? When would you say that you found your own, personal style?
I was a nerdy shy girl growing up. I had light blond hair for most of my early years, but in middle school it became more dirty blond. I had a ton of different styles. In grade 7 and 8 I was a wannabe punk/goth. In grade 9-10 I was, unfortunately, a scene kid, who was obsessed with Pokémon shirts, bright colours and checkered vans. In grade 11 I became slightly more fashionable and started wearing skirts and more girly things. In grade 12 I wore what I do now.

When you were a kid, what did you want to become when you grew up? Why?
Fashion designer, teacher or artist. I loved designing fashions when I was younger. I wanted to be a teacher because I had all these plans on how to make my classes so fun and exciting. I wanted to be an artist because I was a creative kid who couldn't ever stop drawing or doodling or making little crafts (well, I still do this).

What were you like in high school?
I wasn't popular or unpopular. I had a close knit group of friends but unfortunately most of us have drifted away. For the first few years of highschool we were the scene kid group. When we stopped dressing in that style, I'm not sure what our group was considered.

However, most specifically, I was the 'smart kid' in highschool. I was obsessed with my grades and studies. On graduation day I received the Governor General's award which goes to the student with the highest average.

What do you know now wish that you knew when you were 14?
I was 'straight edge' when I was 14 and I looked down on my friends for drinking. I now wish that I hadn't because having a few drinks doesn't make you a bad person. Plus I drink now so it was quite hypocritical. However, I suppose everything you do in your past helps you to grow and learn things, so I probably wouldn't change anything that I knew back then.

Looking back, what's the very best thing that ever happened to you? And what would you rather wish you had never had to experience?
I've been very blessed in my life. It's hard to pick the very best thing. Some of the best things that have happened to me range from picking out  my kitten for the first time, right after she was born, graduating highschool, being able to travel with my family, meeting my best friend in kindergarten and then my other in grade seven. I think that some of the struggles in the early grades are things I wouldn't want to experience again. Bullying and that sort of thing.

What are your plans - or dreams - for the future?
I'm sort of in limbo right now about my future. I'm not sure where my life or education will take me. I'm into design and interiors so one day I hope to have a really nice house and closet, hah. I hope to have a family and lots of cats. I want to stay friends with the friends I have now for a very long time. I'm not sure where I want to live because even though I don't really like Winnipeg; this is where my friends and family are. One of my dreams is to become skilled in more than one area. For instance, I want to learn to do sugar art and other types of skilled baking. I want to learn how to cut and dye hair properly.  I would like to have a job that is comfortable with not too much stress. I want to be able to enjoy my job and not dread going to work.

What's your family like?
Awesome, supportive and caring. We may not be perfect but sometimes it feels that way. My parents would be there for me through anything. My dad is a big inspiration for me because of how hard he works in his life. My mom is inspiring because she always aims at making everything special and perfect. And I will definitely treat my kids the same way someday.

What is your biggest regret?
I try not to think about regrets in life because you shouldn't regret anything. What happened, happened. In the words of RENT, "Forget regret, or life is yours to miss." :)

What does a regular day in your life look like?
Wake up and go to school. Get home and plan out what I need to do for the night. If there is homework, I do that while procrastinating on the internet.

However there is no regular day really. I could work, go to school, or go out with my friends. Sometimes I also have lazy days where I just lay around my house in boredom. I enjoy it.

Tell me about your studies!
I'm majoring in History and getting a minor in Mathematics. I'm not sure what I will do with it yet, but there are quite a bit of possibilities. I would like to look into teaching but also look into getting some further education in Fashion.

How would you describe yourself to someone who knows nothing about you?
Slight introvert. Not so mainstream in terms of my opinions. Motivated. Creative. Crazy cat lady.
I'm someone who can either go out or stay in and read a book; both satisfy me.

What would you say is the biggest misconception that people who don't know you have about you?
That I'm rude or elitist. I think that just comes from the fashion interest I have. And it is a stereotype, like I said above about everyone in fashion being snooty. I love to encourage others in their fashion and I'm really interested in meeting new people. None of my friends are interested in fashion or art like me, but that doesn't stop me from loving them for what they are.

What is your best quality, according to you? What is the worst?
Best quality is that I'm empathetic and passionate about life. I love making every moment special.
Worst quality is that I'm a little shy and introverted and that makes it hard to meet people sometimes. I'm hard to get to know.

What specific moment in your life do you believe has been most important in turning you into the person you are today?
In grade school when I decided I wanted to do well in school, and try my hardest at everything. I'm the same way today. I love meeting goals and doing the best I can in every aspect of my life.

timing is everything

I watched the movie Country Strong hence the country-inspired outfit. Don't hate ! I really like the song from the movie "Timing is Everything", cute scene posted below.

ALSO Today I went to Forever 21 with the gals and this is what I ended up buying :)

pleated skirts, sheer skirts, maxi skirts

I think I really like them ! Sometimes it's hard when you like a trend because often times it looks good on well, other people and not yourself. I think I would opt for a cream colour skirt or black though.

water for elephants

I just got home from seeing Water for Elephants. I have the book but have not read it yet...but after seeing the movie I cannot wait to start it ! I loved the visuals in the movie. The 30's were a strange era; a mixture of rugged vagabonds and dauper gentlemen. The story was of course romantic and touching. Movies that are told with old people as narrators of their life always choke me up.

Go see this movie.  4/5.

strawberry fields forever

I'm in the middle of setting up my shop to sell random items of clothing from my closet :) I have tons of shoes I need to sell and dresses, as well as a few jackets. The only problem I'm having is determining shipping costs because I've never sold anything on the internet before. I'm hoping to have everything running before the end of the month or early May !
Today I'm wearing this bow (loveee) oversized shirt from Romwe. It's gonna be flyyyy come summer with jean shorts and whatnot.

anthems for a seventeen year old

Today I went to value village and fabric land. APPARENTLY I got a button up top that resembles something a 70 year old hutterite basket weaver would wear, but I liked it okay ! I'm sure I will style it soon and everyone will be amazed and aroused ;)

I also picked up a cute vintagey frame that I'm going to paint white, some fabric to make skirts, and another white button up. Speaking of white button ups...

white button up top from romwe, shoes from aldo, shorts from urban behavior.

Check out my feature on Sarah Loves. You know what I love? Her style of portraiture :) So lovely.
Thank you Sarah !

One more exam. One more. Then freedom (for the summer at least). I can't believe this day has finally arrived.
This summer will consist of work and of course fun. I'm also going to try and set up a 'shop my closet' because there are a lot of items I would like to try and get rid of. A hugee list actually ! Stay tuned ;)

This clutch is from Le Mode Accessories and I really love it. It definitely eases my neutral-appetite for spring :) I'm going to probably be wearing it a lot. I'm thinking it will look great with just plain jean shorts and a white button up.

Feeling neutrals/blackwhite/green. Will this spring be the spring I try a billowy, maxi skirt? I might be a little too short to wear something like that...

candy says

Updating from school today. I just finished my Medieval History class and now all that's left is the exam. Sometimes in university I found some courses left me feeling unsatasfyed. However with this class I actually felt like the couse had been rich with information which at the end came to a solid conclusion; even with all its complexities. The class was with Gerry Bowler and I would definitely recommend him as a Professor. I'm hoping to take his course next year called, "The History of Christmas." Amazing, right?

Today I also have a presentation. I actually hate public speaking. I feel alright before presenting; confident and ready, but as soon as I step up in front of the class or audience I start stuttering and shaking through the whole speech ! Maybe I need some speech-therapy? Of course it depends on the audience I suppose...

So this blouse is the other item I recieved from Wholesale-Dress.net. Again, quality is not good but I think the blouse looks great tucked into a skirt or shorts. It doesn't look good on its own though because the bottom seam is poorly sewn; it looks rather chunky and doesn't lay flat.

shorts from romwe, shoes from forever 21, top from wholesale-dress.net

a story of boy meets girl

Hey allll.
I got this dress from Wholesale-Dress. Of course I knew I shouldn't expect amazing quality - just look at the prices ! The sewing quality is pretty terrible but the dress on looks decent I think. The site is good for cheap clothing but you should be expecting low-quality items. Styled correctly they can look great though. I also got a blouse from the site which I will wear tomorrow.
Isn't the owl ring cute ? It's from Romwe.

sugar, spell it out

I'm really boring lately because I'm studying for exams and...that's about all.
I took a break this weekend on Friday to go see a movie. We ended up seeing "Beastly". Of course it wasn't anything amazing or special, but it wasn't absolutely horrible either. Some of the details of the movie were kind of silly (Like how they tried to match circumstances that were happening in modern times to those happening in the original Beauty and the Beast). You will know what I mean if you see it. Also, I thought that the "witch" should have appeared actually ugly (she was pretty hot in my opinion). When the guy turns into the beast he isn't really horrible in my opinion either...his ugliness didn't really make sense (gashes, tattoos...).
I guess overall I would rate it 6/10.
Here is what I wore today :) I really like this crop top/heart applicate top from Romwe. What do you think? They have it in a few other colours as well.

dot tights from H&M, wedges from Jeffrey Campbell, top from Romwe.
